2 pm ž June 7th

at Historic Sherwood House

Noted Author to Speak

The Yonkers Historical Society will present American History awards to outstanding Yonkers high school students on Sunday June 7th, at 2 p.m. at Historic Sherwood House.

Students receiving these awards will be selected from candidates  who have shown an exceptional interest in the history and political development of the United States, New York State and the City of Yonkers. These students have been nominated by the Social Studies Department Chairs at each high school located in Yonkers.

Noted author and educational consultant Vincent T. Dacquino will speak at the program. The author of several books for children, including the popular young adult novel Kiss the Candy Days Good-Bye, he has made numerous appearances at schools and historical sites based on his adult biography, Sybil Ludington: The Call to Arms. His latest book, Hauntings of the Hudson River Valley: An Investigative Journey, will be the topic of his presentation on June 7th.  Among the interesting stories featured in this book are the confession of George Denny, hanged in Putnam County in 1844; tales of the haunted Smalley's Inn, still open to diners in Carmel, New York; and the tale of Chief Nimham, massacred in Van Cortland Park in 1778.

Thanks to the efforts of State Senator Nicholas Spano, the Yonkers Historical Society will receive $50,000 in state funding towards improvement to the Society’s Sherwood House site, located on Tuckahoe Road at the Sprain Brook Parkway. Senator Spano was also instrumental in reaching out to Con Edison and Shop Rite Supermarkets and gaining their support to provide both long-term maintenance and capital improvements at the property, which was developed in 1740 as a tenant farm site for the Manor of Philipsburgh. We look forward to commencing with building projects after our completion of a master plan for the Sherwood House, its grounds and adjacent structures.

On April 21, 2006, NYS Senator Nick Spano, NYS Legislator Lou Mosiello, William McGrath of Con Edison and John Salcedo from Shoprite on Tuckahoe Road join YHS President Jeff Williams, trustees and docents Nancy Sarmast, Georgina Reynolds and Betty Morgan at Sherwood House as Sen. Spano announces a $50,000 grant to refurbish the house and grounds (see photo above).
