Sherwood House, located 340 Tuckahoe Road (at the southbound entrance to the Sprain Brook Parkway) in Yonkers, is one of the few remaining pre-Revolutionary War tenant farmhouses in the New York Metropolitan area. It was built about 1740 by Thomas Sherwood on land leased from Frederick Philipse and was purchased in 1801 by Yonkers’ first physician, Doctor John Ingersoll.

Historic Sherwood House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is owned and maintained by the Yonkers Historical Society and is
open Sundays September 10 thru October 1, 2006 and Saturday, September 30 and by appointment.

For information, telephone the Yonkers Historical Society at

"Yonkers Then and Now"

A joint photographic project between the Yonkers Historical Society
and Blue Door Art Association compared images of Yonkers from the past to the present. The photographs were on exhibit in the Yonkers Room at the Riverfront Library, One Larkin Center and at the Grinton I. Will Library, 1500 Central Avenue, Yonkers. The exhibit will travel throughout Yonkers. Stay tuned for its next display venue. The YHS hopes to produce a book based on this exhibit.

Thanks to the efforts of State Senator Nicholas Spano, the Yonkers Historical Society will receive $50,000 in state funding towards improvement to the Society’s Sherwood House site, located on Tuckahoe Road at the Sprain Brook Parkway. Senator Spano was also instrumental in reaching out to Con Edison and Shop Rite Supermarkets and gaining their support to provide both long-term maintenance and capital improvements at the property, which was developed in 1740 as a tenant farm site for the Manor of Philipsburgh. We look forward to commencing with building projects after our completion of a master plan for the Sherwood House, its grounds and adjacent structures.

On April 21, 2006, NYS Senator Nick Spano, NYS Legislator Lou Mosiello, William McGrath of Con Edison and John Salcedo from Shoprite on Tuckahoe Road join YHS President Jeff Williams, trustees and docents Nancy Sarmast, Georgina Reynolds and Betty Morgan at Sherwood House as Sen. Spano announces a $50,000 grant to refurbish the house and grounds (see photo above).
